DOWNTOWN GOLD

Each show plays the best from the 60s/70s/80s - A large part of each programme is made up of listener suggestions...

We pay homage to the 'swinging' sixties when the Beatles and The Troggs were the chart biggies...

Listener memories play a big part in the show. What was the first 7inch vinyl single you bought? Where you part of the swinging sixties scene in Belfast or elsewhere in Northern Ireland?  Bouffant hair, thick black eyeliner, short sleeveless dresses and the thigh-length boots – ah – it’s all coming back to you now. Even if you weren’t around then you’ll certainly be aware of the tunes like Aretha Franklin’s Respect, Bob Dylan’s Like a rolling stone or The Byrds Mr Tamborine man. Sunday’s Downtown Gold 2-6pm includes Sunday 60s just after the news at 5pm, when we play 15-20 minutes of musical memories from your favourite decade.

Then there's the 'Glam Rock' era that was the seventies. Sounds that have stood the test of time – Marc Bolan and T-Rex, David Bowie, Mud and the Rubettes. Glam Rock is a sound that people bought in to in their droves and still demand to hear today. Did you dress like a Bay City Roller and follow the band everywhere? Did your world almost end when Alan left the group?  Maybe you were one of the screaming girls up and down the country who had a major crush on Donny Osmond or David Cassidy but wouldn’t admit it your friends. Come out of the closet, turn the radio up and let’s relive the fabulous seventies.

There’s a big revival in the ‘shoulder-pad’ era that was the eighties. Did your Limahl hair style look any thing like the great mans? Did you get caught up in the whole Flashdance thing? This was the decade when the 12inch vinyl remix of the best tunes of the day were a must. Stock, Aiken and Waterman introduced Kylie to the world. Michael Jackson unleashed Thriller on the world, Band Aid raised millions for Africa and the soap stars started their onslaught on the charts. Eighties no1s included The Pretenders - Brass in pocket, Blondie – Atomic and Olivia Newtown John with ELO – Zanadu. You’ll also hear Abba, Police and Soft Cell.

Friday's Downtown Gold has more of an upbeat feel when many people are getting ready for the weekend and Sunday afternoons show has a more laid-back feel and includes Sunday 60s just after the news at 5pm (15-20 minutes of solid 60s favourites). Also on Sunday, 'What Was No1 On Your Birthday' - listeners text in with their date of birth and we hunt down the song that was no1 and play it!

On all three shows - 'The Classic TV Show' - when we give some clues to a classic tv show from the area...and the 'Lyric Line' when we give out a random line from a song and you have to guess what we took it from!

If you love Duran Duran, Elvis or Showaddywaddy, you'll love Downtown Gold!
